Cremation only, no funeral: direct cremation costs in NZ, city by city

Yes, you can have a cremation with no funeral in NZ. Cremation-only runs from $1,945 in Auckland to $3,400 in Hawke's Bay on one national provider's published prices. What is included, what isn't, and how a funeral home compares.

Direct cremation, also called cremation only, is a cremation with no funeral service and no viewing: the person is collected, the paperwork is done, the cremation takes place privately and the ashes are returned to the family. It is the lowest-cost option in New Zealand. Value Cremations, a national direct-cremation provider and FDANZ member, publishes its package price for each region: from $1,945 in Auckland, $2,145 in Wellington and $2,150 in Christchurch (read on its cost page on 19 October 2026). A family can still hold a memorial or gathering of its own afterwards.

Can you have a cremation with no funeral in NZ?

Yes. Nothing in New Zealand law requires a funeral service before a cremation. The crematorium needs the right paperwork, including the medical certificates and the cremation forms, and the death has to be registered with Births, Deaths and Marriages, but a ceremony is a family choice. Most funeral directors offer cremation only, and some providers do nothing else.

What is a silent cremation?

Silent cremation, unattended cremation, simple cremation and cremation only are all names for the same thing as direct cremation: the cremation takes place without a service, a viewing or family present. Some providers use "silent" to mean only that nobody attends the committal. If a quote uses a term you don't recognise, ask what is and isn't included, using the checklist further down.

What does direct cremation cost in each city?

These are Value Cremations' published "package cost from" prices, copied from its cost page on 19 October 2026. They are one provider's prices, not an average, and they can change.

  • Auckland: from $1,945
  • Nelson and Tasman: from $2,100
  • Wellington: from $2,145
  • Christchurch and Canterbury: from $2,150
  • Hamilton and Waikato: from $2,395
  • Taranaki: from $2,445
  • North Otago: from $2,815
  • Tauranga and Bay of Plenty: from $2,850
  • Blenheim and Marlborough: from $3,115
  • Dunedin: from $3,200
  • Hawke's Bay and Napier: from $3,400

Its page says Northland, Manawatū and Southland are not priced online yet. For those regions, and for any town not listed, ask a local funeral director for a direct cremation price; our directory lists FDANZ members by region, including Manawatū-Whanganui and Hawke's Bay.

What a direct cremation package usually includes

Value Cremations lists what its price covers: care of the person who has died, transport into its care from within the covered area, organising the documents and certificates the cremation needs, a basic cremation casket, the cremation arrangements at a crematorium in the region, and return of the ashes.

What costs extra

The same page lists what is not included, and it is a useful checklist for any quote:

  • A funeral service or viewing
  • Catering, flowers, newspaper notices (how to word one) or venue hire
  • Memorial plaques, cemetery fees or interment of the ashes
  • Doctor's fees for the medical documents
  • Transfers outside the included distance (its page mentions 30km) or outside business hours
  • An oversized casket, if needed

How does that compare with a traditional funeral home?

Most funeral homes also offer direct cremation, but many price it line by line. Dil's Funeral Services, on Auckland's North Shore and Hibiscus Coast, publishes a full price list. On its May 2026 list, the professional fee to arrange a direct cremation with no service or viewing is $3,030. The other parts are listed separately, for example:

  • Transfer of the deceased: $470
  • Custom wood casket: from $1,705
  • Schnapper Rock Crematorium standard cremation fee: from $1,065
  • Medical documentation: from $80
  • A death certificate: $38 a copy (Births, Deaths and Marriages charges $35 direct; see how to get a death certificate)

Added together, those lines come to a little over $6,300 before any urn or extras, against a package from $1,945 in Auckland. That is not a like-for-like comparison: a funeral home's arrangement includes more time with its staff, more choice of casket and the option to add a viewing (Dil's lists a "simple cremation" with a family viewing or gathering at $3,470 for the professional fee). But it shows why it pays to ask every provider for a total, not a fee.

What is the cheapest funeral in NZ?

Direct cremation is the cheapest option a funeral provider sells, from $1,945 in Auckland on Value Cremations' published prices. A family can go further and arrange the cremation itself without a funeral director: New Zealand law allows it, and the family then registers the death with Births, Deaths and Marriages within three working days of the cremation (see how to get a death certificate). It means handling the transport, the casket, the medical forms and the crematorium booking yourselves, which most families find too much at a hard time.

What should you ask before choosing cremation only?

Ask for the total price in writing, not the professional fee alone. The gap between the two is where most surprises sit: the crematorium fee, the doctor's fee for the cremation certificate, transfers after hours or beyond the included distance, and the casket. The questions at the end of this page cover each one, and the Dil's price list above shows how a line-by-line quote adds up.

Is direct cremation a "proper" funeral?

It is a legal and dignified way to care for someone, and it is increasingly common. What it leaves out is the ceremony at the time. Many families hold a memorial later, at home, at a marae, a church, a park or a favourite place, once the ashes are back and people have had time to travel. That can be as simple or as large as you want, and it is not tied to the funeral director's timetable.

Can I get help paying for a cremation?

Possibly. Work and Income's Funeral Grant can contribute towards reasonable funeral costs, including cremation, if the person and the family meet its tests; ACC helps instead if the death was the result of an accident. The Funeral Grant explained. If there is still a gap, funeral loans in NZ covers the options to check before borrowing.

Questions to ask any provider before you agree

  • What is the total, including the cremation fee, casket, transfer and medical certificates?
  • How far will you collect from without an extra charge, and what if the death is after hours?
  • How long until the ashes are returned, and can we collect them or are they delivered?
  • Can the family see the person before the cremation, and what does that add?
  • Are you a member of FDANZ or another industry body, and what complaints process do you follow?
