Christchurch and surrounds. The post-2011 generation of directors here is unusually strong on community and outdoor-style services, partly a response to that period — many families wanted ceremonies that broke from the formal church-funeral default.

What is the cheapest funeral in Christchurch?
The cheapest funeral in Christchurch is a direct cremation, also called cremation only: no service, no viewing, and the ashes returned to the family afterwards. Value Cremations, a national direct-cremation provider and FDANZ member, publishes a Christchurch and Canterbury price from $2,150 (read on its cost page on 19 October 2026). A family can still hold its own memorial later, at home, in a park or at a church, which costs little or nothing.
How much does a burial cost in Christchurch?
Burial costs more than cremation because the council fees alone are higher. Christchurch City Council's cemetery fees for 2026/27, including GST, are $2,071 for a full-size plot and $1,389 to inter an adult on a weekday, so $3,460 before the funeral director, casket and service are paid for. A Saturday or public-holiday burial adds $846. Burying ashes is far cheaper: $598 for an ash plot and $277 for the interment (council fees from 1 July 2026).
Who pays for a funeral when there is no money?
Usually the estate pays first, and banks can release money from the person's account to cover the funeral before probate. If there is not enough, Work and Income's Funeral Grant pays up to $2,697.43 to people who meet its income and asset tests (Work and Income, updated 24 June 2026), and ACC pays a funeral grant instead when the death was caused by an accident. Ask the funeral director about both at the first meeting; most help families apply.
How do you compare funeral prices in Christchurch?
Ask every firm for an itemised written price list, and compare the director's own professional fee separately from the costs they pass on: the cemetery or crematorium fee, the death notice in The Press, the celebrant and the flowers. Ask whether the quote includes collection from the hospital or rest home, and what a weekend or after-hours collection adds. A smaller firm with its own chapel and a large firm with several chapels can quote very differently for the same service.
Rangiora, Rolleston and the wider Canterbury area
Selwyn and Waimakariri have funeral homes of their own on the register above, including firms in Rangiora and Kaiapoi, and Christchurch firms also travel out to Rolleston, Lincoln, Rangiora and Kaiapoi. Burials in those districts use the local council's cemeteries, which set their own fees, so ask the director for the cemetery charge in writing.
